Alcatraz Charity Swim

June 1st, 2024

The POETIC Foundation and Water World Swim are teaming up to fight childhood cancer. Proceeds and donations from this event will help bring new hope to pediatric cancer patients and their families.

About this swim

After such a successful event in November 2023, we’re expanding the field to 95 swimmers! This June, participants will start near Alcatraz Island and swim 1.25 miles across the San Fransisco Bay to Aquatic Park. The swim features some fun and challenging currents on your way to the opening of the cove and to the beautiful views of the San Francisco skyline. Swimmers are accompanied by coaches in the water, on kayaks, and SUPs.

Sign up to swim or donate to support a swimmer and help increase The POETIC Foundation’s outreach.

Event Schedule

8:00am – Meet at Fisherman’s Wharf, at the Chucky’s Pride boat near the corner of Jefferson and Jones.

8:30am – Board the boat and set sail to the start.

9:00am – Swim! Finish at Aquatic Park.

This swim is not timed and is not competitive.

The POETIC foundation

The POETIC Foundation was established in 2011 to increase the access to quality cancer care for children whose first-line medications have failed them. We’re able to support new and exciting treatment options, like research into the biology and genetic makeup of childhood cancer allowing treatment to be tailored to the needs of children.

THE POETIC FOUNDATION & WATER WORLD SWIM

Dedicated to fighting Childhood Cancer

Water World Swim is teaming up with the Pediatric Oncology Experimental Therapeutic Investigators’ Consortium (POETIC) led by Stanford University, to raise funds to cure childhood cancer. Private funding for pediatric cancer research is essential as only about 4% of government research funds are allocated to childhood cancers.

For twenty years, POETIC has worked to promote and accelerate the early clinical development of promising cancer treatment therapies to achieve long and healthy lives for children and adolescents with cancer. The POETIC Consortium includes thirteen academic medical centers that specialize in pediatric cancer care and research. Each year, POETIC consortium members treat 2,000 newly diagnosed patients.
