About Us

Who We Are

Water World Swim has been the heartbeat of open water swimming in San Francisco Bay since 1995. What started as a small collective of cold-water enthusiasts has grown into one of the world’s most recognised open water swim organisations — with participants from more than 40 countries crossing our start lines each season.

We specialise in guided, safety-supported crossings of the Bay’s iconic landmarks: Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate, and the full circuit we call “Swim Around the Rock.” Beyond San Francisco, our international programme takes swimmers to the Mediterranean, the Strait of Magellan, and select events in Australia and the Pacific.

Our Mission

To make open water swimming accessible, safe, and unforgettable for participants of every level — from first-time bay swimmers to elite marathon athletes.

Safety First

Every Water World Swim event is conducted with Coast Guard–compliant safety protocols. Our team of experienced kayak escorts, safety swimmers, and support vessels ensures every participant is never more than a few metres from a trained safety professional. We hold all required permits, work closely with the U.S. Coast Guard, and conduct pre-event safety briefings for all participants.

Our History

In 1995, a group of open water swimmers began organising informal crossings of San Francisco Bay. Over the following decade, growing demand and a passion for world-class event management transformed those informal swims into a full event series. Today, Water World Swim hosts more than 15 events per year, attracts international media, and has certified thousands of swimmers as Alcatraz crossing finishers.

Bay Clinics

Not ready for a full crossing? Our Bay Clinics programme gives new swimmers the skills, confidence, and open water experience they need to tackle a full bay swim. Small groups, expert coaches, and a supportive community environment make these clinics one of our most popular offerings.
