Strait of Magellan

Swimming the Strait of Magellan

Located at the southern tip of Chile, the Strait of Magellan is one of the world’s most challenging open water crossings. The strait connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and is renowned for its extreme conditions, remote location, and historical significance.

Water temperatures typically range from 5°C to 8°C, making cold-water preparation essential. Strong currents, unpredictable winds, and rapidly changing weather demand careful planning and experienced support teams.

For many swimmers, crossing the Strait of Magellan represents a lifetime achievement and a true test of physical and mental resilience.

Highlights

  • Water temperatures as low as 5°C
  • Historic route connecting two oceans
  • Remote Patagonian landscapes
  • Internationally recognised endurance challenge
  • Expert support and safety planning

Preparation

Participants are encouraged to complete extensive cold-water acclimatisation before attempting the crossing. Many swimmers spend months preparing through regular cold-water sessions and endurance training.
